MEDIA - FAQ

What is riser?

riser is a project committed to the promotion of culture and talent. It helps young emerging musicians and bands get more appearances on stage and greater media coverage. To achieve this, they are supported by more established music makers who perform a show together with them. In addition, the emerging musicians and bands are given the opportunity to perform further concerts without the more established music makers. Participation is free of charge. For their performances, they receive an adequate fee.

riser.AMP | short for amplify. The more established artists and bands choose two young emerging artists and put on a show together with them. The idea is by no means for the rising artists to be in the shadow of the established artists, but instead to be part of a joint performance. Through the collaboration with these more established artists and bands, visibility for the rising artists is amplified.

riser.FAV | The FAV, short for favourites, chosen by the more established artists and bands perform alone. Shows are also organized in which multiple different rising artists perform together. This emphasizes the stylistic diversity and fosters an exchange amongst artists and with the concert promoters.

What’s riser’s mission?

When young musicians want to take the next step of their career as an artist, they are often confronted by a harsh reality. They have difficulties finding a stage on which they can perform and reach their audience. Rarely do they achieve the media presence they need to become established, i.e. make a name for themselves, in the music scene and in the public eye. The fees are not enough to cover their own expenses. Disillusioned, many of them hang up a promising career before it has really begun. Covid-19 has made this situation even worse. riser is a project that wants to change this. By offering young emerging musicians and bands with great artistic potential the opportunity to get more appearances on stage and to develop, riser contributes in turn to the development of a diverse music scene in Switzerland.

Who is riser?

riser is a non-profit organization based in Zurich and Freiburg. It is committed to promoting young Swiss musicians and bands with great artistic potential regarding a national or an international career. The project team consists of established Swiss music makers and creative artists, concert promoters, as well as specialists in the areas of music production, booking, event management, and communication. These industry experts come from all four language regions of Switzerland and grant the emerging artists access to their network and their experience in the Swiss music industry while accompanying them on their path into the musical and media limelight. The project is funded through partners, grants, foundations and concert promoters throughout Switzerland.

Who can participate in riser?

At riser, talented emerging musicians and bands from throughout Switzerland and across all genres can participate. They must have performed at least 10 to 15 public concerts and also have a set that is longer than 45 minutes without covers. The minimum age is 18. There are basically no age restrictions upwards, but the aim of riser is, however, to preferably promote young emerging artists with potential regarding a national career. Participants must be Swiss artists or have their place of residence in Switzerland. The more established artists and bands choose their rising artists themselves. There is no jury or contest involved.

How does the registration process work?

Basically, the more established artists and bands choose their rising artists themselves. It is, however, also possible to apply for a riser.AMP.

riser.AMP – Who are the more established musicians and bands?

A team of experienced bookers contacts more established Swiss musicians from different genres and books them for a concert in one of riser’s partner clubs. Part of their responsibility is to plan the concert with an emerging musician or band of their choice as a mentor and perform it in front of an audience.

What does it cost to participate in riser?

Participation in riser is free of charge for emerging musicians and bands. For their performances, they receive a fixed fee and/or share of all ticket sales/admissions.

Who funds the project?

Participation in the project is free of charge, and funding to pay for artist fees is only possible thanks to partners who have been active in the area of sustainable youth and music promotion for many years: Bank Cler (Main Partner), Valais Wasser (Partner). riser cooperates closely with clubs, concert promoters, funding projects, foundations as well as other associations and sponsors. Together, they help the talents and bands get more paid appearances on stage, more media coverage, and more contacts to stakeholders in the professional music scene. Funding for the project is organized by experienced fundraising specialists.

What services do the parters expect in return?

The partners of riser take a sensitive approach to dealing with the challenges, chances and risks of cultural sponsorship. First and foremost, they want to accompany emerging musicians on their path to becoming professional artists and bands, and by doing so, sustainably enrich the Swiss music scene. They support projects both financially and with moral support in the form of ideas, and maintain a cooperation based on respect and on equal terms. At the heart of the services in return is storytelling. Partners are permitted to tell the stories that the musicians, bands and concert promoters write on their communication channels. They also receive a limited number of tickets for the concerts to which they may invite their employees and clients. As is standard practice in cultural sponsorship, they receive visual representation across riser’s communication channels and are mentioned as a partner wherever possible and reasonable. riser is glad to see voluntary marketing cooperations develop between the partners and artists that are based on trust and mutual esteem.

Networking and Cultural Participation

More established music makers and creative artists from all parts of the country work with riser as producers or mentors and help network the young professionals with the professional music scene. With the help of joint concerts, the young musicians and more seasoned musicians can get to know one another, exchange ideas and gain common experience. The concerts are held throughout Switzerland and in cooperation with partner clubs, such as Exil in Zurich, Nouveau Monde in Freiburg, Grabenhalle in St. Gallen, Sommercasino in Basel, ISC in Bern, Kofmehl in Solothurn, Schüür in Lucerne, Mokka in Thun as well as with other concert promoters.

A Unique Project

riser promotes emerging musicians and bands from throughout Switzerland and enables them more paid appearances on stage, greater media coverage and several valuable contacts. By fully developing their potential and professionally kickstarting their career, they enrich the Swiss music scene. riser supports the talented musicians and bands in establishing themselves, i.e. making a name for themselves, as confirmed artists. Sustainability

riser encourages traveling by means of public transport, using electric vehicles as well as serving food and beverages made with regional and seasonal products. The project has a sustainable effect on music creation in Switzerland now and in the future. Created thanks to this cultural, linguistic and intergenerational mix of creative people is a community of creative artists who are a prime example of the cultural diversity of our country. Thanks to the project, friendships are formed alongside a network of music makers spanning generations who come from all regions of the country. Ultimately, this will energise and enrich the Swiss music scene.

Promotion of Women

riser strives to keep the proportion of woman members as high as possible. Together with Helvetiarockt (an association for the promotion of women in the area or contemporary music) and La Gustav (academy for contemporary music), talented female musicians are encouraged to become a part of riser.
